Quantity-Quality-Variety: The 3 Keys to Improving Your SEO With Backlinks

Earn Money

There are two kinds of Search Engine Optimization (SEO): onsite and offsite optimization. Onsite optimization has to do with improving SEO elements within your own website. Offsite optimization is mainly related to the links your site receives from other sources, otherwise known as backlinks.

Backlinks are the incoming links to a website or blog. These inbound links are how internet search engines, such as Google, “find” and rank your website. Figuring out how to create SEO backlinks is crucial if you want to increase traffic to your site.

This article explains three key factors in producing high search engine ranking through backlinks.

1. Quantity of Backlinks

The more backlinks your site receives, the higher it will rank. While you want to create a lot of backlinks in order to attract more traffic, you also want your number of backlinks to increase naturally over time. It is for this reason you must not create as many backlinks as possible all at once. This may be seen as spam by Google.

Be aware that some backlink sources are not reputable, and can actually harm your chances for a high search engine ranking.  It is better to stay away from backlink creation services that promise to build thousands of backlinks to your site for tens of dollars. I also avoid link exchange. These kinds of links will not benefit your internet presence.

2.  Quality of Backlinks

The quality of your site’s backlinks is key to obtaining a high Google search rank. Sites are ranked not only by the quantity of traffic they receive but also by the traffic quality. Site quality actually is ranked on a scale of 0-10, with 10 the highest, in order to gauge “PR” or “Page Rank.” A PR of 5 or greater is considered a “high” page rank. Try to ensure that your backlinks are from sites with a PR of five or higher. Investing in quality will help your own site rise in organic search results and maintain a high PR.

Creating backlinks to your website as part of your offline optimization strategy can take weeks or even months. Backlinks are like “votes for your site” from the internet’s vast audience. It will serve you well to invest effort into creating strategically effective backlinks.

3.  Variety of Backlinks

The final key factor toward achieving a high Google search rank is to vary your backlink sources. Google will notice if you obtain backlinks from the same sources time and again, and it will lower your rank to make room for sites that have a variety of incoming link sources. Consider variety as a quality factor in website SEO. Variety demonstrates that your site is actively sought by new and different sources, thus increasing your chance for greater Internet traffic. Try to obtain backlinks from unique domains. Aim for at least one hundred unique backlinks, and remember to vary the sources as you continue to gain new ones.

Instead of “outsourcing” your backlink tasks try to do it yourself over 5-6 months. The most effective tactic is to use a mixture of high ranking Web2.0 sites, like Squidoo or Hubpages, together with links coming from posting in other blogs and certain reputable article directories. This is how I allocate my time for backlinks, and I find that it works:

  • 70% posting and commenting in high ranking blogs
  • 20% posting in high ranking Web2.0 sites
  • 10% article posting in high ranking directories

I hope this helps you too.

    Hi Alex,

I would like to add one more key: relevance.

How relevant the page you are getting your links from is to the page the links point to is important. So, if you get links from a page about cars to your site that is about raw food diet the SEO power is lower than getting backlinks to your raw food site from a page about organic nuts.

On-site SEO is must, but backlinks are also very important for majority of sites who want to target high for specific niche. One thing what Google and Bing loves is very on-topic relevant incoming links. Suppose my site is selling Online Flowers then it is must that my site gets backlinks from that specific niche. Search engine loves this and give very high-value. Links from web directory, classified sites are secondary links. One should not concentrate on it much. Likewise, if my site is into web hosting, I should get backlinks from web hosting review sites, forums, and blogs.

The mindset of backlinks is astonishing, I would much rather have a new blog and write unique headlines with low competition and rank high for those then to spend countless silly hours building links.

When your content is good and you get high rankings, backlinks come natural, people naturally link out to good content and is much better then going out and getting links yourself!

      I agree with Dan.

      It happened to me recently.

When i started my blog for a few weeks, i was busy promoting my post daily in forums (according to my blog’s niche forums are good).

But then i ended to be flagged as spams because i abuse my blog’s links.

So i stopped promoting it in forums, and just blog as usual. Now, i noticed many forums (including the forum where i was flagged, even the moderator) link to my blog post.

      I learnt new stuff!

Thanks for your point Dan/Kini and thanks for reading this post.

It is a good idea, as you both say, to target low competition keywords and not to spam forums with backlinks.

Once you are ranking at the top for these keywords then why not target the high competition keywords in the same niche.

I have found that the big money is in the competitive keywords. If you leave them, you leave 99% of the profit for the competitors. In my team, when we start a new campaign, we start with the low competition keywords and we move up to the high competition keywords, until we rank at the top for them too. Some of these keywords give us $20,000 a month in income. Ranking at the top for the most competitive keywords is a huge asset. It is practically a licence to print dollar notes!

Everyone now a days hunting for backlinks and they think backlinks are everything, Although they do play major role in your rankings but a perfect on-page optimized page can rank faster and with fewer backlinks.

That is an interesting point Daisy! Thank you.
Onsite SEO is so important and we must not ignore it.
However, I find that offsite SEO helps you increase your sites ranking for certain keywords that onsite SEO does not. Let’s face it, you can only seo your site for so many keywords. That is why backlinks do help!
